چکیده

Maritime tasks, such as surveillance and patrolling, aquaculture inspection, and wildlife monitoring, typically require large operational crews and expensive equipment. Only recently have unmanned vehicles started to be used for such missions. These vehicles, however, tend to be expensive and have limited coverage, which prevents large-scale deployment. In this paper, we propose a scalable robotics system based on swarms of small and inexpensive aquatic drones. We take advantage of bio-inspired artificial evolution techniques in order to synthesize scalable and robust collective behaviors for the drones. The behaviors are then combined hierarchically with preprogrammed control in an engineeredcentric approach, allowing the overall behavior for a particular mission to be quickly configured and tested in simulation before the aquatic drones are deployed. We demonstrate the scalability of our hybrid approach by successfully deploying up to 1,000 simulated drones to patrol a 20 km long strip for 24 hours.

Communication and Control for Swarms of Aquatic Surface Drones: the HANCAD and CORATAM projects

The availability of relatively capable and inexpensive hardware components has made it feasible to consider large-scale systems of autonomous aquatic drones for maritime tasks. In this paper, we present the HANCAD and CORATAM projects, which focus on the fundamental challenges related to communication and control in swarms of aquatic drones. We argue for (i) the adoption of a heterogeneous appr...

Towards Autonomous Micro UAV Swarms

Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as quadrocopters have gained great popularity over the last years, both as a research platform and in various application fields. However, some complex application scenarios call for the formation of swarms consisting of multiple drones. In this paper a platform for the creation of such swarms is presented. It is based on commercially available quadroc...

Optimal Dynamic Coverage Infrastructure for Large-Scale Fleets of Reconnaissance UAVs

Current state of the art in the field of UAV activation relies solely on human operators for the design and adaptation of the drones flying routes. Furthermore, this is being done today on an individual level (one vehicle per operators), with some exceptions of a handful of new systems, that are comprised of a small number of self-organizing swarms, manually guided by a human operator. Dronesba...

Development of Micro UAV Swarms

Some complex application scenarios for micro UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) call for the formation of swarms of multiple drones. In this paper a platform for the creation of such swarms is presented. It consists of modified commercial quadrocopters and a self-made ground control station software architecture. Autonomy of individual drones is generated through a micro controller equipped video ...
